Aurora has two very different kinds of tree stock within a short drive of each other, and tree trimming has to account for both. The Heritage Conservation District around Yonge and Wellington carries large, decades-old shade trees that grew up with the original lots, while the newer subdivisions toward Highway 404 are planted with young trees still finding their shape.
A mature tree on an older street usually needs careful, structural work such as crown thinning or canopy reduction, correcting a past bad cut, or easing weight off a fork that has carried decades of growth. A young tree in a new subdivision needs the opposite, light formative tree trimming and pruning that sets its shape for the next fifty years and costs very little to do well now. Either way, the right tree trimming schedule depends on which kind of neighbourhood the tree is growing in.
Aurora regulates tree removal on private property through its Private Tree Protection By-law. Most homeowners can remove up to two trees in a twelve-month period without a permit, and larger properties are allowed two trees per quarter hectare on the same basis.
A heritage tree always needs a permit, whether it stands on its own or inside a heritage district, and the town's stated turnaround on a complete application is about thirty days. None of this applies to routine tree trimming, dead branch removal or storm cleanup, only to taking a tree out completely. Tree trimming that keeps a tree standing is exempt for exactly that reason. Aurora sits close enough to Lake Simcoe that winter systems moving across the lake can turn to freezing rain rather than snow. Snow slides off a crown without doing much harm, but a coating of ice adds real weight to every twig and small branch at once.
A crown can end up carrying several times its own weight by the next morning, with no wind involved at all. That is when a weak fork or a branch that was already leaning past its limit finally goes, which is why so many of our emergency storm damage cleanup calls follow an ice event rather than a windstorm. The emerald ash borer reached Canada in 2002 and has since spread through this part of York Region, and an ash tree that is infested will not recover on its own. Once the wood has been dead for a season or two it dries out and turns brittle all through the trunk, not just at the tips.
That brittleness changes how the tree fails. Dead ash tends to break at the branch unions rather than mid-limb, which is exactly where a rope or a rigging line puts the heaviest load, so a standing dead ash usually needs a bucket truck rather than a climb. Dead branch removal on a live ash gets harder every season it is left, and once the whole tree is beyond saving, tree removal only gets more difficult the longer it stands. Regular tree trimming on a living ash is the only way to catch the early signs before the tree is gone.
We turn down some jobs on purpose, and we think property owners should know which ones before they call.
Cutting the main branches back to stubs is not tree trimming, and we do not offer it under any name. It forces a tree to regrow a dense, poorly attached crown that ends up heavier and weaker than the one it replaced.
If a tree is touching or close to a line that has not been confirmed dead, that work belongs to the utility first. We wait until the line has been made safe before anyone climbs.
If tree trimming or crown reduction will fix the problem, we say so instead of quoting a removal. Recommending tree trimming over a removal costs us a larger invoice, and we do it anyway. Taking a tree out is the last option, not the first one on the page.

The cutting itself follows that plan. Branches go through the chipper as the tree trimming proceeds rather than piling up, which keeps the site manageable and the crew's sightlines clear.
Once the cutting is finished, the wood is stacked, chipped or hauled away exactly as agreed, and the area is raked clean before the crew leaves. A tree trimming visit should not leave you with a cleanup job of your own.
